Just letting everyone know that it did come out a few weeks ago.
I have it and it works fine. They have tutorial videos accessible from within XSI.
I find it just as good as the old 4.2 version.
It has it's differences but once you figure them out it becomes better. Softimage

Sounds interresting.
I have some questions you might be able to answere:
Is the free version very limited?
How much do you have to pay for the full version?
I have just scratched the surface of 3ds max 9, is it just
as complicated or do you find it easier to work with?
(if you have tryed 3ds max that is...)

I like XSI main problem is that there isnt many tutorials for it. The free version quite limited you can't really render, import/export certain file types like .obj

Ok, well I guess they work for money at softimáge, they want cash!
I watched some tutorial videos at the site,
it looks complicated.. But thats probably just me...
I did not see the price for it though...

XSI isn't as hard to learn as Max imo, I started learning both awhile back and haven't touched them in awhile, but I found XSI easier then Max.
I've got some good XSI vids if you want them? just let me know

Everyone says Max is much easier I don't know though... I like both i'm prefering max at this point becuase of all the tutorials.
Don't know the price- why would you buy it

Hmm well if XSI doesent have any big advantages over max,
in beeing easier to learn and use with source modding I think
I got enough trying to conquer max atm.

I learned xsi before max , so I like xsi best right now. This is the free version which has some limits. The real versions are thousands of dollars. So free is good. The new version has alot more freedom on importing files, which 4.2 had trouble with.
I never tried texturing in max so I dont know how easy/hard it is to do. Xsi seems fine at doing this.
